Education

At St Clare’s College, we prioritise a student-centred approach to success and a staff-centred culture of support. Our Learning and Teaching Principles guide excellence in education, emphasising the importance of collaboration between students, teachers, parents, and the wider community. These principles are designed to help students navigate their adolescent years and emerge as informed thinkers and lifelong learners, equipped to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

“… what a child can do today with assistance,

she will be able to do by herself tomorrow.”

Lev Vygotsky, Interaction Between Learning and Development

Our Ethos and Approach to Learning

The cross, at the heart of our ethos, symbolizes the importance of our Catholic faith and core Christian values. The repeating flame shape represents the fruits of the Holy Spirit and St Clare’s guiding influence, inspiring both students and staff to live by these principles.

The circular design of our image reflects the continuous journey of lifelong learning within our vibrant community. We are committed to providing an environment where students grow academically, socially, spiritually, and personally. We focus on teaching students, not just subjects, aiming to engage the ‘head, heart, and hands’ through motivating and intellectually stimulating learning experiences. The accompanying quotations—one focused on the learner and the other on teaching—serve as a foundation for effective curriculum design.

Learning Dispositions

Successful learning goes beyond memorisation—it requires adaptability, perseverance, and collaboration.

The Learning Dispositions framework highlights key habits that empower students to think critically, solve problems, and grow from experience. By persisting through challenges, asking insightful questions, applying past knowledge, thinking flexibly, and working interdependently, students can build a strong foundation for lifelong learning and success.

Learning

Teaching Practices

Classroom Mastery

Classrooms must be safe spaces for all students and staff, and we, therefore, hold high expectations of student behaviour. All staff apply strategies from Classroom Mastery for every lesson, every day.

Classroom Mastery promotes positive teaching approaches, a strong classroom culture, and thriving students. Designed to enhance student well-being and learning, it supports our College at a whole-school level, ensuring meaningful improvements in every classroom, every day.

High Impact Teaching Practices

High Impact Teaching Practice (HITP) is based on national and international research on how students learn, process and retain information. It aligns to the Science of Learning and cognitive science principles and creates a practical methodology for best practice teaching in the classroom.

At St Clare’s College, HITP is embedded in every classroom, ensuring a consistent and effective learning experience. This is made possible through high-quality curriculum resources, ongoing professional learning, system-wide assessment, and peer support, empowering teachers to focus on what they do best – teaching.

HITP establishes clear expectations, helping students enter the classroom ready to learn. Research (Sweller, 2011) shows that students achieve the best outcomes when provided with explicit instruction, ample practice, and continuous feedback—all core elements of our teaching approach.

Further information on HITP can be found here

Curriculum

At St Clare’s College, we are dedicated to delivering a dynamic and inclusive curriculum that supports the diverse learning needs of our students. With a strong focus on future readiness, we equip students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to thrive in 21st-century careers and citizenship.

Aligned with the Australian Curriculum, our programs prioritise research-based teaching practices in every classroom, ensuring all students are supported, inspired, and empowered to reach their full potential.

Inclusive Education

About Inclusive Education

At St Clare’s College, every student is valued and supported in their academic and social learning. We recognise that each student learns uniquely. Some students require reasonable adjustments and modifications to successfully engage both in and out of the classroom. Students with specific needs have access to targeted interventions to ensure their learning is optimised both socially and cognitively.

Our Inclusive Education team collaborates with students, families, and medical professionals to develop Personalised Plans that support individual learning needs. This includes:

  • Differentiated curriculum for accessible learning
  • Modified assessments to track progress and success
  • Classroom Support Assistants to enhance learning opportunities
  • Specialised teaching practices embedded with Classroom Teachers to support in-class participation

By fostering an inclusive environment, we empower students to reach their full potential and build a strong foundation for future success.

Wisdom Program

The Wisdom Program supports Year 7 and 8 students in developing literacy skills through small-group instruction using the MacqLit program over two years. Students are invited to participate based on diagnostic testing, including PAT-R, NAPLAN, and WARP assessments, which identify and track low-progress readers.

MacqLit is the primary program implemented, which focuses on phonics, word identification, and connected text reading, helping students build confidence and improve overall literacy. This intervention ensures students can successfully engage in their learning.

Student Progress Program

The Student Progress Program (SPP) supports academic achievement in a focused and supportive study environment, open to all students. Held every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm in the Learning Commons, the program provides access to:

  • Academic tutors and faculty staff for subject-specific support
  • teacher-librarian to assist with research and resources
  • A structured study space

The SPP requires a strong commitment to meeting the prescribed study conditions. Student attendance will be recorded, monitored and tracked using the SEQTA kiosk, requiring students to tag-in and out.

Homework Club

The St Clare’s College Homework Club provides students with a supportive and structured environment to complete their assignments. Staffed by dedicated teachers, the club offers academic guidance, helping students develop strong study habits and a deeper understanding of their coursework. Completing homework at school allows students to stay focused, access resources, and receive immediate assistance, reducing stress and improving time management. It’s a great opportunity for students to enhance their learning while balancing their academic responsibilities.

Homework Club operates Monday – Thursday from 3:30pm – 5:00pm each week.

Co-Curricular

Co-Curricular Activities

St Clare’s College students may participate in a diverse range of programs to inspire and challenge them outside the classroom, nurturing their mind, body, and spirit.

Our dynamic array of activities include sports, the visual and performing arts, student leadership, academic competitions and service activities that reflect our school’s values.

Through involvement in co-curricular programs students develop confidence, resilience and a sense of self; build relationships; develop problem-solving, leadership and teamwork skills; and enhance one’s own and others’ health and wellbeing.
